DESTINOS - Lago di Como (parte 02)

Terminamos con el repaso de nuestro viaje por el norte de Italia (podéis ver las entradas anteriores pinchando aquí y aquí).

El último día visitamos el Castello di Vezio, situado en un pequeño pueblecito en lo alto de la montaña, desde donde se puede disfrutar de unas vistas incleíbles del lago. 

Después cogimos uno de los ferrys que cruzan el lago para dirigirnos a Bellagio, uno de los pueblos más impresionantes de la zona, situado en el punto exacto en el que se bifurca el valle glaciar.

Ya por la tarde, continuamos nuestro recorrido por el brazo oeste del lago hasta llegar a Como, la ciudad que da nombre al lago. En la Gelatería Lariana pudimos disfrutar de uno de los mejores helados que he probado en mi vida. ¡Totalmente recomendable!

On the last day we visited the Castello di Vezio, located in a small village on the top of a mountain, where it is possible to enjoy the stunning views of the lake. 

After, we took one of the ferries which cross the lake to get to Bellagio, one of the most amazing villages in the area, located at the exact point where the valley branches.

In the afternoon, we continued our rout along the western branch of the lake to reach Como, the city which gives the name to the lake. At Gelatería Lariana we could enjoy one of the best ice cream I have ever tasted. Totally recommended!

DESTINOS - Milán

El segundo día de nuestra escapada por el norte de Italia (podéis ver la entrada anterior pinchando aquí) lo dedicamos a visitar la ciudad de Milán, capital de la región de Lombardía. 

A pesar de su importancia como destino turístico, Milán no nos pareció tan bonita como otras ciudades italianas. Sin embargo, sólo por su maravillosa catedral, el Duomo, y especialmente por la visita a sus cubiertas, ya merece la pena conocerla. 

Además de la catedral, también visitamos la Galería Vittorio Emanuele II, que conecta la Piazza del Duomo con la Piazza della Scala, y el Castello Sforzesco, que hoy en día alberga un museo de arte.

On the second day of our weekend getaway to the northern part of Italy (you can see the first post by clicking here), we visited the city of Milan, the capital of the region of Lombardy.

Despite its importance as a tourist destination, we fell that Milan is not as beautiful as other Italian cities. However, it is worth a visit if only for its beautiful cathedral, the Duomo, and especially for the visit to its roofs.

In addition to the cathedral, we also visited Vittorio Emanuele II Galery, which connects Piazza del Duomo with Piazza della Scala, and Castello Sforzesco, which now houses an art museum.

DESTINOS - Lago di Como (parte 01)

Hace algo más de una semana volvimos de nuestra última escapada a Italia. En esta ocasión hemos hecho una pequeña ruta por la parte más al norte del país, que aún no conocíamos, concretamente por la zona del Lago di Como. 

Para quienes lo no conozcan, el Lago di Como, también llamado Lago de Lario, es el tercero más grande de Italia y está situado en la región de Lombardía, unos 50 km al Norte de la ciudad de Milán y a los pies de la cordillera de los Alpes.

A pesar de haber visto numerosas fotos de la zona mientras preparábamos el viaje, la realidad nos ha dejado fascinados. Es un entorno de una belleza extraordinaria, con numerosos pueblecitos plagados de rincones pintorescos, con una vegetación exquisitamente cuidada y con el paisaje de los Alpes como telón de fondo constante. 

Tras aterrizar en el aeropuerto de Bérgamos, dedicamos el primer día a visitar algunos de los pueblos situados en el brazo este del lago: Lecco, Mandello del Lario, Lierna y Varenna.

Lecco no está tan explotado turísticamente como otros pueblos del lago y quizá, precisamente por eso, nos encantó. Las calles de su centro histórico, especialmente la piazza XX Settembre, y su paseo a lo largo del lago son totalmente recomendables. 

Lierna, por su parte, es un pueblecito muy pequeño y encantador donde se encontraba el bed&breakfast donde nos alojamos, Le Fate del Lago, un establecimiento muy especial tanto por su decoración como por el trato tan personal de las dos hermanas que lo regentan. 

Pero, sin duda, lo que más nos gustó de este día (e incluso de todo el viaje) fue nuestra visita a Varenna, un pequeño pueblecito con calles estrechas y en pendiente y pintorescas casitas de pescadores. Su paseo junto al lago ofrece unas panorámicas increíbles y cuenta con varios restaurantes desde donde se puede contemplar el atardecer. 


A couple of weeks ago we came back from our last weekend getaway to Italy. This time we have visited the northernmost part of the country, than we didn't know yet, specifically the Lake Como area. 

For those who may not know, Lake Como, also called Lario, is the third largest lake in Italy and it's located in the region of Lombardy, 50 km north of Milan and right on the piedmont of the Alpes mountains.

Although we had seen many photos of this area while we were preparing our trip, reality fascinated us. This is an environment of an extraordinary beauty, with its little villages filled with picturesque spots, an exquisitely careful vegetation and the Alpes as background. 

After landing at Bérgamo Airport, we dedicated the first day to visit some of the villages located on the southeastern branch of the lake: Lecco, Mandello del Lario, Lierna and Varenna. 

Lecco is less exploited as a tourist attraction than others villages in the lake and perhaps for this very reason we loved it. The streets of its historical centre, especially the piazza XX Settembre, and its promenade along the lake are definitely recommended.

Lierna is a very small and charming village in which the bed&breakfast where we was staying was located. Le Fate del Lago is a very special place, both for its decoration and for the personal treatment of the two sisters who run it. 

However, what we liked most the first day was, without a doubt, our visit to Varenna, a little village with narrow streets that follow the slope of the mountain and picturesque fishermen's houses. Its promenade along the lake offers incredible views and there are a few restaurants where you can enjoy the sunset.

DESTINOS - Braga y Guimaraes

Continuamos con una nueva entrada sobre nuestra ruta por la mitad Norte de Portugal (podéis ver las anteriores pinchando aquí, aquí y aquí). 

El cuarto día de nuestro viaje lo dedicamos a visitar las ciudades de Braga y Guimarães.

Guimarães es conocida principalmente por su casco histórico, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en el año 2001. Sus estrechas calles y sus plazas siguen conservando su carácter medieval, acentuado durante nuestra visita por la celebración de la Feria Alfonsina.

Por la tarde visitamos la ciudad de Braga, o más concretamente, su Estadio Municipal, obra del arquitecto portugués Eduardo Souto de Moura. Construido en el año 2003 sobre una antigua cantera del Monte Castro, el edificio está compuesto por una gran estructura de hormigón armado que se integra a la perfección en el paisaje circundante. Los portugueses afirman orgullosos, y no les falta razón, que se trata del estadio más bonito del mundo.  

Más tarde, y para terminar el día, nos acercamos al Santuario de Bom Jesus do Monte, un importante lugar de peregrinaje al que se accede por unas impresionantes escaleras que salvan un desnivel de 116 metros.

On the fourth day of our trip, we visited the cities of Braga and Guimãraes. 

Guimãraes is best known for its historic centre, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2001. Its narrow streets and its squares still keep its original medieval character, particular increased during our visit by the celebration of the Alphonsine Fair. 

In the afternoon we visited the city of Braga, or more specifically, its Municipal Stadium, designed by the portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. It was built in 2003 on an old quarry site in Monte Castro and the building comprises a big reinforced concrete structure perfectly fitted in the surrounding landscape. The Portuguese proudly claim, and they are not entirely wrong, that this is the most beautifull stadium in the world.

Later in the day, we went to the sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, an important pilgrimage site, accessed by an impressive staircase saving a drop of 116 meters.
